I am never going to drive in Copehagen again!
Well, it started on Saturday October 7, we all got in the van and headed for Minneapolis. Having learned from our last trip, we started out early, so we would be sure to get to the airport in time. We did, 4½ hours before departure time. The check-in had not even opened yet. The lady at the counter did feel sorry for us though, the family loaded up with luggage like that, and opened at couple of minutes early. She would not let us check the luggage the way we had planned to, but did allow us 12pcs instead of the 5 specified in our reciept. That did mean, however, that we did not get neither stroller nor car seats with us on the plane. Ah, well, we managed anyway, Xander was tied on Daniela's back, and we had Ruben in a harness, so he couldn't run away. We had to kill 3½ hours at the gate before we could board, so Daniela found time to go with Ruben and buy a small bag for him that he could drag around. On the plane we got 2 extra seats, so we actually had a whole row to our selves, all praise to Iceland Air for being really generous, and we succeded in getting a little sleep because of it. The flights were uneventful, and we arrived in Copenhagen after noon on Sunday. My parents were there to greet us and take the luggage.
There was no way to fit us in the car together with the luggage, so we all took the train to Herning. That was a great ride, at least at first, when it was all new for the boys. After a while, it was just as tiring as riding the car. In Herning we were picked up at the station and went to my parents house, where we were greeted by everybody except Niels-Peter. That was too much for the boys, and they cried almost until we could get them to bed.
The next couple of days were nice, we did almost nothing, and just enjoyed the stay.
On Tuesday evening we drove to Copenhagen, and almost couldn't find the B&B where we had booked a room, so we could be at the American consulate early the next morning. That was the plan anyway, turned out the room had no alarm clock, and we hadn't thought of bringing one. The solution? Take turns sleeping. No, that didn't work either, Lukas and Xander decided to keep us up all night instead. We obviously had no problem waking up in the morning, and we made it to the consulate without getting too upset about the traffic in Copenhagen.
When we were done at the consulate, we went to the café where we were going to meet with some friends, that is, we wanted to do it that way, instead we spent the better part of an hour trying to find the right street, then to find the café, then to find a place to park the car, then to try and find our way back to the right street and the café again.
It was nice to meet with an old friend again, though, and we talked for a long time. I think Daniela enjoyed finally meeting the girls from the internet forum too, but I don't really know since my friend and I quickly left them together with Lukas.
In the afternoon we visited two more girls from the Daniela's internet forums, and we had a really good time.
The trip back was rather horrible, we hadn't slept all night, and I was the only one that could drive a stick, so guess who had to drive the whole way. We did have to stop a couple of times, first for some caffeine, then for a little powernap. The third time we stopped, it was because Daniela had noticed something that was stuck under the windshield wiper. What could it be? It was a parking ticket, of course, $90 for not spotting the missing sign that said we had to pay to park... I am never going to drive in Copenhagen again! |

Yes! Our passports arrived this morning, with the new visas. We can now travel to and stay in the States for another 3 years. Look out Ames, we will not be leaving any time soon...
